On October 28, 2016, Progress
Rail delivered two new EMD SD70ACe-T4 demonstrator
locomotives from its Muncie, IN plant to Norfolk Southern for evaluation. The
pair,
EMDX 1607 and 1608, were initially shipped to Roanoke, VA, for NS to test on
trains
via its Starkey Hill. This testing was done during the week of November
7th.
NS Research Car 32 was sandwiched between the pair during testing.
NS 32 is
equipped with dynamometer couplers and data acquisition devices to measure
locomotive performance. Note that temporary water tanks can be seen on the left side
walkway of 1607, which are used to spray water on the rail to test locomotive adhesion.
Once NS is completed with the
adhesion testing, the pair will go into service on
NS for
several months, then will be shipped to Kansas
City Southern for evaluation.
On November 17, 2016, NS ran
test train 995 out of Roanoke, VA with NS Dash 8.5-40CW
rebuilds 8501, 8504, and NS Research Car 32 leading over Starkey Hill, with EMDX
SD70ACe-T4 demonstrators 1607 and 1608 trailing on the rear as helpers.
